Taher Jaoui: Welcome to the Jungle
Corridor Contemporary proud to present Welcome to the Jungle - a solo exhibition of works by Taher Jaoui. The exhibition is showing simultaneously at both Corridor Contemporary locations, Philadelphia and Tel Aviv, with each respective location showcasing a unique selection of works by Jaoui.
Jaoui is a French Tunisian artist who lives and works in Madrid, Spain. His works are exhibited all over the world and gaining enthusiastic reviews. Without any formal art education, his artistic practice is influenced by African primitive art, graffiti, glitch art, the COBRA movement as well as the philosophy and attitude of post-war abstract expressionism.
Creating captivating and labor-intensive work, Taher Jaoui's paintings are rich assemblages of layered forms, vibrant colors, expressive gestures, and mathematical signs and formulas. Jaoui uses the canvas as a personal means of expression via dynamic interaction - a physical back and forth dialogue in which perspective and orientation continuously evolve until all elements find balance. The artist likes to compare his technique to a dance routine with a familiar partner.
Jaoui transports the viewer into the jungle of his soul and invites them to experience and interpret the work according to their own worldview and experience. Jaoui's artistic practice continues to evolve as he explores new worlds such as sculpture and technology while simultaneously expanding his pictorial language and welcoming more and more viewers to enter his rich emotional world.
Over the years, Jaoui has formulated a unique personal language which consists of a variety of individual elements that are disassembled and reassembled in his various paintings. The result draws many of its elements from the artist's computer and engineering studies that come to life in the form of abstract mathematical signs and formulas, many of which are incorporated into his fascinating compositions that formulate his distinctly pure “Taharian” language.
During the 2020 lockdown, Jaoui's desire for human connections and interactions led him to a new form in his artistic language. In his latest series, he utilizes a new form of figurative paintings in his abstract language. Work from this new figurative series are included in the exhibition.

Pareidolia: Jason Andrew Turner
Corridor Contemporary Philadelphia is proud to present Pareidolia - the latest solo exhibition from Jason Andrew Turner.
“The moon is a man, staring back at us from the sky. The fire hydrant on the street looks in your direction. The clouds drift above us revealing shapes and forms that seem familiar. More than once, people have found Jesus in slices of toast. Our brains are wired to perceive a myriad of interpretations and meaning within vague visual stimuli. This process is called Pareidolia (par·ei·do·lia), and your brain is hallucinating a thing, usually faces, that are not actually there. The paintings in this exhibition are exploiting this phenomena. A series of lines and patterns to give the impression of something, someone, that is real, that they exist.
Beginning with prominent facial features, I build the contours and foundation of a face with a single weight of line quality. Repetitive patterns of straight lines are playfully applied to augment the plains of shadow and light while retaining the flatness of the surface. Through the process of methodical lines, the personalities and temperaments are intuitively brought forth from the canvas. Color is then applied to lock the figure into the environment of their disposition through coded color theory to emphasize the subject. The automatic process of mark making and responding, allows the unconscious mind to control and inform the image to be a reflection of my own concerns; ultimately creating a dialog with a separate proxy self. With this I am able to create a history and dialog with the subject, as if a mirror to the culture at large.
Despite our innate ability to register faces in almost anything, we often fail to see the person beyond their face. At a glance, it is impossible to see another’s trauma, anger, depression, or joy; and far too often we jump to conclusions or indifference about one another. Depth and understanding is not immediately discernible. It takes time and patience to look past the facade, in order to understand what is beyond first impressions. Through this newest series of portraits, I have mined personal experiences, through listening and conversation, to create imagined people with whole lives and worlds. I invite the viewer to see the complicated person beyond the flat surface of the canvas, to question your own judgements or biases, and to consider the complicated, intangible connection we all have with one another.”

Transcendence: Roos van der Vliet & Yigal Ozeri
Corridor Contemporary Philadelphia is proud to present our latest dual exhibition Transcendence.
Transcendence unites the work of Netherlands based Roos van der Vliet and Yigal Ozeri, an Israeli artist based out of New York City.
Both artists' works share a common ethereal quality that seemingly extends beyond the profane level of experience and existence. Exploring light, elements of the natural word, the human experience, growth, and simultaneous decay primarily via portraits and figurative works, both van der Vliet and Ozeri allude to a spirit of existence and harmony that exists symbiotically in nature and humanity.
Whether depicting an intimate portrait of a sitter, rendering a figure amongst a primitive natural setting, or alluding to universal forces of life and death, both artists transport the viewer to a space which suspends them in an internal space of exploration, curiosity, and transcendence.

Working in a wide range of modes and mediums, the artists featured in Person to Person express their own unique philosophy and pictorial approach to portrait-making through their works. Whether capturing the essence of a sitter, paying homage to a visionary artist, critiquing societal norms/trends, depicting familial bonds, or subverting historic modes and traditions of portraiture, each of the works featured engender fascinating discussion regarding interpretation, artistic method, and society/culture at large.

Human Nature: O’Neil Scott Solo Exhibition
Corridor Contemporary Philadelphia is proud to present Human Nature- the latest solo exhibition from Philadelphia based artist O’Neil Scott.
“The exhibition Human Nature touches on different elements of the human condition. Centering around love, protection, growth, and what it means to overcome - subtle emotion and symbolism is carved into each painting. As humans grow, they evolve, adjusting their attention and focus towards values they deem important. A large part of this process encompasses self-evaluation and inner courage.
My hope is that the work grabs the viewer, touching them in a way that allows them to reflect on their own aspirations. Helping the viewer understand their own journey and how far they have come, while aware of where they are going and the work yet to be done. Mental and spiritual growth are the cornerstones of this exhibition coupled with an underlying theme of perseverance against all odds that hopefully provides a level of empathy that all humans understand.”
